What are other uses of Polystyrene Paper

Jun 1, 2025

The main use Prestige has for Polystyrene Paper is in the Hospitality business.  That said, our parent company, Kwickway Products, has found a few unique applications beyond hospitality.

Polystyrene paper, a type of lightweight, non-slip non-porous, and chemically resistant plastic sheet, has several niche and industrial uses thanks to its flexibility, smooth surface, and compatibility with styrene-based solvents. Here are some of its diverse applications:

Tray Liners for Optical Equipment

  • Use: Polystyrene paper is used as a non-abrasive, static-resistant tray liner in the handling of delicate optical components such as lenses, prisms, and filters.

  • Why it works:

    • Its smooth surface prevents scratches on sensitive surfaces.

    • It is non-slip, so optical components stay in place when trays are moved.

    • It resists absorbing moisture or chemicals that could damage optics.

    • Can be treated with anti-static coatings to avoid dust attraction.

Clear mesh for Hair Care Applications

  • Use: In hair salons and cosmetic industries, polystyrene paper is die-cut or formed into mesh-like sheets that is a substitute for aluminum foil, which is difficult to manage because it tears easily and is opaque so one cannot see through it. The applications for a clear version of our product includes:

    • Hair tinting or highlighting wraps

    • Allows the stylist to see how the coloring is setting

    • Less mess because you don’t have to open up the foil.

    • Reusable wraps during hair treatments

    • Base mesh for wigs or temporary hair extensions

  • Why it works:

  • Lightweight, easily mouldable and hygienic

  • Clear so you can see through it

  • Heat-resistant to a degree, making it suitable under dryers

  • Offers a clean and disposable alternative to reusable fabrics

Pigment Dispensing and Mixing for Color and Gelcoat businesses.

  • Use: Polystyrene paper is used in the precise dispensing, blending, and testing liquid pigments, dyes, or colorants in industries like automotive coatings, textiles, and plastics. It is used by many pigment companies to secure precise delivery of pigments, without wasting viscous pigment that would otherwise stick to the sides of containers, and allows companies to reuse or recycle these containers

  • Why it works:

    • Flexible - the polystyrene paper is pliant and can be shaped into an envelope to contain pigments.

    • Precision - liquid pigments are viscous and stick to the sides of containers. Wrapping these pigments in a liner or envelope of polystyrene paper allows for precise delivery of pigment.

    • “Like dissolves like” - polystyrene dissolves completely in a styrene based or polyester solvent.

    • Binder – there is some evidence to show that the polystyrene paper helps bind the pigment to the solvent.

    • Reuse and recycle – polystyrene allows users to reuse and/or recycle containers.
